One of these days you will finish hopefully not until you get a good education and then you will have to find a job. If youre a boy you could be a professional football player, a doctor, lawyer, auto mechanic, or teacher. If you are a girl, you cant be a professional football player yet but you can be any of the other things. At this stage of your life, there are lots of possibilities and as long you do well in school you will keep a lot of possibilities open. Do any of you know yet what kind of work you would like to do? I liked my job. I worked with computers and had to keep learning because computers were always changing and improving. I enjoyed my profession greatly because it was always challenging. It seems like everyday I learned something new. The University of Chicago which is a very good business school did a survey of people in many different jobs to try to discover what jobs made people happiest. What do you think was the number 1 job for happiness? It was clergy. In the Catholic Church it would be a priest or deacon. Why do you think a priest of deacon was happiest? After all they are low-paid, priests cant marry, and have to see people when they have problems. It was because they believed that what they were doing was very important in helping others and the people they helped thought ther help was very important to them. Most people work for things which will help themselves or others here on earth but priests and deacons work for things which will help people for all eternity. How did I happen become a deacon What was training like Did wife have to approve I am very happy being a deacon and I do many of the same things that are done by the priests. Some of the things which I enjoy are: Baptisms My wife and I teach the baptism class and I do most of the infant baptisms in our parish. Baptism is the sacrament by which we become Catholics. I often see parents with their little children who tell me you baptized our child. It is such an honor to help these children to start their life with Gods grace. What greater honor can you have than to help someone get to heaven. Another thing I do is help couples who want to be married. Im not content to just perform the ceremony for the couples but I want to help them to have a happy marriage. So I meet with them several times. I try to find out things which might cause disagreements or arguments or problems in their marriage. Usually both of them have to change a little bit. Maybe the man like to spend money foolishly and the woman wants to save for a house Maybe the woman is messy and the man likes to keep things neat Maybe the man likes to play video games in his free time and woman wants to talk or do something together Maybe one person is Catholic and another doesnt go to Church. What kind of problem can this cause? If there are problems, we talk about them and get them to agree to change. Usually one person doesnt have to do all the changing both people might have to change a little bit. These couples may live as husband and wife for 60 years or more and how well they get along - affects the lives of their children. If I can do something to help them get along better, that is very important to them and to me. I also get to preach the homily once a month. Sometimes 2500 people or more have to listen to what I say. That is a real challenge because you have to find something new and interesting each time. I really want to make people think and help them grow closer to God. It is a challenge but I believe that God wants me to do this as well and he helps me prepare my talk. I also do many other things like: Bless new homes when people move into them. Usually they have a nice dinner which I can enjoy with them and get to know them better. I also enjoy greeting people when they come to Church. I want them to smile and be happy when they go to visit God in Church. I am happy to greet them with a smile. Start Young Adult Group & Give Reason The priest does some things which I cant do. Can you think of any? He celebrates the Mass our highest form of worship. I think of it as the time when God meets man. We worship God and he blesses us through the actions of the priest. He also hears peoples confession. It is sometimes hard for people to admit their sins but they are relieved to leave the confessional free of their guilt and sins. As you can see all of these things help people. Were usually not asking people to to do something for us. No were helping them. That makes our job very satisfying. Also there are not enough priests so you are greatly appreciated by everyone. I dont make any money for what I do but I am still anxious to help because the work makes me and others happy. The priests are paid and have a nice house where they live and a good cook to fix their meals and they are appreciated by almost everyone. Have you boys ever thought about becoming a priest. You probably dont feel like you know enough to be a priest now. But if youd like to learn more let me know. We have places nearby where you can learn more about being a priest. But what if you are a girl? You cant become a priest or deacon but there is a wonderful order of nuns who come to Mass at our church. They also help people and people greatly appreciate them too. They are a new order and many young girls are joining them. Would you like for one of them to come to talk to you? You are at a point in your life where many things are possible. You just need to do the best you can at whatever you do. You can ask for Gods help to make good decisions. This is a very important time in your life and your decisions can have a great effect on how well you do in life.
