We are blessed to have a Parish Mission this year from Monday, March 1, through Thursday, March 4. Fr Bill Adams, a Redemptorist, and Deacon Bill Warren will conduct the Mission. They were here two years ago and some said that it was the best Parish Mission they had attended. The theme this year is The Power of the Cross. The main talk will be each evening 7:00-8:30 p.m. with a shortened version for 40 minutes after each 8:30 a.m. Mass. Fr Bill will hear confessions after the services. See the flyer below.

Celebration of Consecrated Life

Recently my wife, Selia and I met a Benedictine Sister from Vietnam who impressed me with her way of life.  She was soft-spoken, alert, energetic, and determined.  After several conversations, I came to appreciate that her twenty eight years of consecrated life has provided her with remarkable gifts to appreciate, enjoy, and bear the burdens of life. Commentary on the Readings for Sunday – February 14, 2010

The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Readings for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time compare spiritual attitudes and relationships and the result of the positive versus the negative.  Attitudes often reflect the success or failure of our relationships and end up affecting our whole being, both spiritual and physical.  Relationships are often based on personal needs and expectations – without regard to the needs and expectations of the other person, thereby setting up an in balance that is bound to fail.  Let us see how this works out in the Readings today. Commentary on the Readings for  Sunday – January 31, 2010

The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Readings for the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, have several themes, each of which could be the subject of this commentary, but the one that I see that stands out is the theme of “love conquers all.”

The First Reading is from the Book of Jeremiah (1:4 – 5, 17 – 19).  In this we read or hear the Prophet describing his first contact with God calling him to be a prophet – God’s spokesman.  Jeremiah didn’t want to be a prophet and gave all kinds of excuses to God; he already had a job, he was a tree trimmer; he was too young and the people wouldn’t listen to him and he would be shamed and embarrassed.  Nevertheless, God insists that Jeremiah was predestined “from the womb” to be God’s prophet to the people of Israel and he need not fear being shamed or “crushed” by his people; “They will fight against you, but will not prevail over you.”  To the people of this time and culture, personal shame and embarrassment were worse than death itself, but God prevails upon Jeremiah and showers His love upon him resulting in Jeremiah being God’s prophet for nearly forty years.  Read the rest of this entry »
